Contrasting cool grays and warm earth tones, Flavia Ruiz designs a Zapotec rug of rich artistry. After dying the wool with natural pigments, she weaves the rug on a pedal loom, expertly revealing glyphs of ancient inspiration.
"To me, Zapotec weaving is a unique art form and my family inspires me to persevere in this field. But starting on my own was indeed a big challenge."
"I was born in Teotitlán del Valle, renowned for the Zapotec rugs, and so like other kids my age, my parents taught how to weave when I was only a little girl. I used to watch them at work, how they prepared the dyes, carded the wool, etc.
"In my family we all feel very proud to be weavers, it is an art form that my parents inherited from their parents, and then they taught us. My brothers work together, you know them in Novica as the Ruiz Bazan Family.
"I began weaving fulltime when I got married, for my husband is also dedicated to arts and crafts. I still recall the first rug I ever wove, it was a sample and I called it 'Oaxaca Flower.' Now I can proudly say I have my own workshop where I work on my own designs and only weave them on a pedal loom.
"To me, Zapotec weaving is a unique art form and my family inspires me to persevere in this field. But starting on my own was indeed a big challenge. It required a considerable investment. Those were difficult times and I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull through, and now I can honestly say it was all worth the effort and hard work.
"I'd like Novica customers to know that my rugs represent a weaving tradition that began many years ago, and that the process remains 100% hand crafted. What you now hold in your hands is a part of my family's legacy."

Querida Senora Ruiz, We have received your marvellous rug 'Night in the Sierra' and it is sparkling in our living room like the stars over the sierra. We are very much taken with the deep and vivid colours and with the creative imagination that went into your weaving work which at the same time remains faithful to the traditions of your ancestors. Thank you for sharing. We will keep a keen eye out for other items of your art production and see how we can display it in our home. With much appreciation Peter and Erika R. , Carlisle, Canada
