Details

Shona art, created by Zimbabwe's largest tribe, is one of the most significant art forms to come out of Africa in the 20th century. Family relationships, such as this pair, are often represented by the animal kingdom in Shona art. The artists believe that their chiseling and polishing releases the spirit form that is trapped within the rapoka stone. Zimbabwe artist Pangani Kwinjo presents the sculpture.

As each piece is one of a kind, please expect variation in the color and veining of the stone. The placement of the baby elephant may also vary.

"So very pleased with the NatGeo Art."

My wife has been on a trip to Africa and in her travel saw the many natural sight sights of the Nations. The Shona statuettes were my gift to her as a memory of her trip.

"Disappointed"

The carving of these elephants is very nice, but they scratch very easily and underneath is not solid stone but white stone, appears to be like soap stone. The rock color appears to be applied only on the surface. Very disappointing!

"Thrilled!"

A completely beautiful sculpture of Mother Elephant and young. The stone chosen for this piece is perfect, the ornament itself is strong and sturdy as you would expect for an elephant ornament. It is beautifully polished and extremely attractive to display. It has great depth and is smooth to the touch. I have to comment on the packaging too, I ordered 2 items, Giraffe family and this one, they arrived together carefully packed in strong individual boxes, then re-packed into a larger box, the utmost care had been taken - impressive!

"Not as pictured"

Item I received was a dull gray with black spots, not the beautifully veined stone depicted in the pictures. Very disappointed since this was a gift for my daughter. Returned.

"A beautiful reminder"

My husband lived in Zimbabwe when it was still Rhodesia and at one time had a chess set carved by a local artist from this same beautiful stone. My elephants are primarily a deep, rich green, another reminder of the beauty of the country my husband had hoped to call home.

"What an Awesome Stone Sculpture!"

I debated for a while getting this sculpture because it is an investment and money has been sparse lately. But I took the leap and am oh so glad I did. This sculpture of mother and baby elephants exceeded my expectations. At first sight the piece is quite heavy and the stone is very smooth. I placed it on a high shelf where ceiling light was already there. What a sweet addition to my family room! And the craftsmanship shows the passion of the artist.

"VERY disappointed in National Geographic"

The product promoted is beautiful, but the one delivered is without any of the beautiful detail in the stone that the photo exhibits. The one delivered had almost ZERO color, just a drab, dark grey.

"Wonderful"

All of Nat Geo's Shona sculptures I've seen, and I may have them all, have been wonderful. I especially like the mama and baby giraffes. They're a great balance between abstract and realism.

"Family Relationship: Mother and Daughter"

This was a gift to a lady whose daughter had been the headkeeper for the elephants at the Houston zoo. The daughter has since passed on. The mother loved it and immediately added it to her daughter's shrine.

"Gorgeous!"

I bought this sculpture for Mother's Day and it was a big hit! It was even more beautiful in person. I love that it has weight to it and looks lovingly crafted and valuable instead of cheap like some animal sculptures often appear.

"Beautiful and Unusual Sculpture"

I bought this as a gift for my stepmother who collects elephants of every kind. As a result, I was attracted to this piece (a picture in the NG Catalog) because it was such an unusual, and beautiful, piece of art. It was a Mother's Day gift. When received, she called me and was thrilled with the gift. It was unlike any that she had and, because it was so unusual, she loved it! I haven't seen it yet, but she said it was so big and beautiful. I can't wait to see it for myself. It sounds like it exceeded my expectations, as I know that NG merchandise is always high quality.

"it is perfectly beautiful!"

this piece adds a gorgeous touch to an interior design. it gives a cozy, familial vibe and is, frankly, just adorable. my heart melted when i received it and i always smile when i look at it. it is easy to scratch, and there were not care instructions included on how to fix it. but, nevertheless, this statuette is a work of art. BEAUTIFUL!
